After exploring Sunset Cliffs, my parents, sister and I drove a mile north to walk the Ocean Beach Pier.

Ocean Beach Pier was constructed in 1966 for fishermen. (Fishing from Ocean Beach itself is difficult; lines and lures catch easily in the kelp beds floating near the shore.) The pier gives kelp-free access to depths of 25-30′, allowing fishermen to catch species they couldn’t catch from the beach. Herring is the most popular fish caught on the pier.

At 1,971 feet, the Ocean Beach Pier is the longest concrete pier on the west coast–but second-longest overall. Santa Cruz Wharf is the longest at 2,745 feet.

Over a half million people visit the Ocean Beach Pier annually. ☼
